Lake Placid is at the North Pole??

We got lucky, apparently it rained everyday in the area for a month straight before we arrived. For 2/3 of our stay it has been sunny and approaching 80 degrees. As I write this it is raining, but we had two full days of near perfect weather.

We ended up extending our stay here an extra night just because it is such a beautiful place and there is so much to see here. It would take at least two full days just to see all of the Olympic sites.

After setting up the trailer at the new site, we set off for a local attraction - the "gorge Falls" - advertised as 700 feet of falls. The Ausable river, very pretty setting, brought back many memories of working on the river. Zoe had a great time climbing all over the place, with no fear as usual, but instilling it into her parents non the less. Kes even stayed awake for most of the 1.5 mile hike looking all around at the trees.
Whiteface mountain - the terrain looks respectable, and the vertical is about 2500 feet, but when I asked what their snowfall was, the answer was "nothin - we make it here". After a little more research, a good year would be over 100 inches, total - I don't think I'll be flying back here in the winter. That said though, the summer truly is beautiful here.

The highest peak in the area, just above Whiteface ski resort, has a great observation tower with a very old steep access road. Once you make it to the parking lot, you walk about 200 yards through a tunnel blasted into the rock and then into an elevator to travel up 27 stories to the observation deck. The whole construction process was actually started by then NY Governor Roosevelt. It was completed when he was President. I'm not sure if any of the governors since have spent any money on improving the place, but the views are amazing.

Zoe had a great time practicing her casting along the river shores at the campground too - with the plastic fish still attached to the end of her line. She was a hit among all of the fishermen out and they all agreed her form was great. She also was the only one who had a fish on their line, even though it was plastic, she was the only one not skunked while we were out there.

Zoe and Kes also had their first rides on a ski lift. Kes was in the front pack with Missy and Zoe sat like a statue in my lap with an ear to ear grin. To get to the elevator to reach the ski jump, it required the short ride. They both did great. Once we made it to the top of the elevator, Zoe, fearless again sprinted out to the observation deck and started up the stairs to the top of the jump with me on her heels. At the same complex, we were able to watch the freestyle jumpers too - called just "jumpers" by Zoe. She now talks about them at least once and hour and declares she "wants to do it"! This has also enabled me to get her to sit and watch ski movies with me and I've got here asking Missy to go on vacation to Vail and Jackson Hole!

We also had a tour of the bobsled and luge track. Quite the complex. The track is actually refrigerated and can keep ice for racing up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Pretty neat place.

Zoe had her first roasted marshmallow - although Missy bought coconut covered ones that I just don't think they fit the bill, but maybe next bag I can talk her into original.

And the picture of Zoe in bed with her feet up - she was sound asleep in that position. She passed out while banging on the wall!

Big news too - Kes made it through the night without waking up!! - Although Zoe got up twice. :( But we're getting there. I also received word that I passed the north east regional board exam. Another one done!!

Its been a busy 3 days in the Lake Placid area - we had a great time and recommend a visit.
