Mystic Connecticut - known for its pizza waitresses from the late 80's and its wooden shipbuilding from the start of the country until early 1900s.
We made the drive from the cape cod area and had a stop over here to see the 'famous' town. The campground was great and the town was even better.
The town is along Mystic river which is deep enough for ships to reach the near by Atlantic. The whole south shore is now a ship restoration area/sailing camp and school/ and museum.
The large ship pictured here was just pulled out of the water last year for a full restoration - it has survived over a hundred years since it was originally built and actually had 80 years in service. Reminds me now of those drawings you see of what people think Noah's ark looked like.

The museum is actually about 50 buildings along the shore and each one is dedicated to a different topic. To the right, you see many of the bow sculptures restored off of ships over the years. Amazing variation in size shape and ornament. Other buildings had everything from small boat building, time keeping, navigation, coopering, sail making, etc.
This picture is of a bald eagle nest about 1 mile from the campground. They have moved all of the power lines to new poles across the street to protect the birds. When we had the camera, the eagle wasn't there, but he was there a couple of times that we drove by.
